Thursday 26/07 (1/2)
Isabelle and I get up at 6am to go and see the Mammoth Terraces, a large complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine (limestone deposits). Mammoth is most famous for its travertine terraces – numerous tiny, shallow pools along ledges of many different levels – though it also has a variety of hot springs and gas vents.
We see the first rays of the sunlight on the terraces. It’s beautiful. We are alone, which, as always, changes everything.
We then take a small trail in the forest. We see beavers (or similar).
We go back to the hotel around 9:30am. We have breakfast with the kids, outside.
We pack everything.
We leave around 11am.
We stop in Gardiner to refuel and buy a picnic for lunch.
We return to the park, through Lamar Valley, where we see many bison again.
We stop for lunch around 1:30pm. Bread with chicken, avocados, cheese and tomatoes. We manage to find a table in the shade.
We continue to Cody, our destination for the day.
We don’t take the shortest road. Isabelle wants to take the scenic Beartooth road.
It climbs up to 3,350m. There is snow.
It’s a nice road, impressive. Unfortunately, the weather is not sunny.
