Thursday 07/09

We leave at 11am.

We go (3 different metros) to the birds and insects market. Not many insects (it’s probably busier at weekends) but it’s interesting to see how the locals consider them as their pets (feeding them worms with tweezers). No birds though. Inside a nearby building, we find many fish shops, where we spend some time. Kids love it. Nice aquariums and (many) nice fish (including turtles and rays).

We want to go and eat a Peking Duck at a well-known restaurant: Quanduje (in Dashilar). But it’s closed.

We try the nearby (also renowned) restaurant, Duyichu, specialized in dim sums. There are excellent (crab/pork, shrimp/pork/leek). Two surprising facts: we want to order some rice but they don’t serve rice in this restaurant (which amazes us for a Chinese restaurant) and we are asked to pay before they place the order. Not really customer-friendly…

Kids go to the apartment, to work a bit, while we continue to discover our neighborhood. We take the Yangmeizhu street (trendy design shops as well as antics), then the Liulichang Fongjie and Liulichang Xijie streets, both with plenty of art shops selling calligraphy sets, stamps, paintbrushes, tea sets, fans…

When we arrive at the apartment, 2 hours later, we find the kids in front of the door… The owner changed the code of the lock but we didn’t get his message (on WeChat) since we still have no internet connection outside Wi-Fi spots… Poor kids…

We rest at the apartment for 2 hours.

At night, we go and eat in ‘Snack Street’ in Wanjulin. It is very animated and very touristy. We try the scorpions but we skip the “tasting” of the tarantulas, the snakes, the seahorses, the starfish, the grasshopper and other local “delicacies”…

We walk to the Donghuamen night market but it no longer exists.

We take a (double deck) bus to come back, for the first time.
