Travel day to Philippines and 1st day in Santa Elena

Thursday 09/11 – Flight Tokyo – Manila

C’était une journée de voyage. On s’est réveillé assez tôt, vers 6h pour terminer de tout emballer et partir vers la station de métro à 7h. On était très efficace. Tout s’est bien passé. On a pris le métro, puis on a essayé de se faire rembourser les cartes de métro (pour lesquelles on doit donner une caution). Et là, on s’est rendu compte qu’on ne pouvait pas se faire rembourser dans cette station car ce sont des cartes qui appartiennent à une autre société. Il y a plusieurs compagnies différentes qui gèrent le réseau de train et métro au Japon, et du coup, acheter des tickets et s’y retrouver en général dans le métro est plus compliqué qu’en Chine par exemple…

On a perdu un peu de temps, mais on a quand même attrapé le train qui allait directement à Narita, un des 2 aéroports de Tokyo. Cela prend quand même 1h20 pour sortir de Tokyo, ce qui nous donne l’occasion de voir la banlieue de Tokyo et même les champs, tellement l’aéroport est loin !

En arrivant là-bas, on a rendu nos cartes SIM, puis on s’est rendu au comptoir de Cebu Airlines, même si on était 2h30 avant le vol. Heureusement car la file était déjà longue et les contrôles avant le départ sévères. J’ai dû retrouver les billets prouvant qu’on allait sortir des Philippines endéans le mois. J’avais ces preuves dans mon ordinateur. Mais j’ai dû sortir plein de choses de mon sac pour y avoir accès et ensuite, j’ai oublié de reprendre mon guide qui a dû rester quelque part sur le comptoir de check-in… (je m’en suis aperçu quand on était déjà dans l’avion… trop tard pour faire demi-tour malheureusement). Mais, j’ai une copie électronique, donc ce n’est pas si grave.

Dans l’aéroport, on a mangé les derniers sushis au Japon, puis on s’est mis à la recherche de whisky japonais pour Miguel, en vain. Sa marque restait introuvable (ou plutôt ‘sold out’).

On a pris l’avion pour un vol de plus de 5h. L’avion n’était pas complet et on avait un peu de place, mais il y avait des enfants qui n’ont pas arrêté de geindre pendant tout le vol. On était doublement content d’atterrir ! Nos enfants ont bien travaillé pour l’école (du français avec Jules et des maths avec les filles) et ont regardé des films sur leur iPad.

A l’arrivée, tout s’est très bien déroulé. On a vite retrouvé Miguel qui était gentiment venu nous chercher avec la grande voiture de ses parents. Il nous a accompagnés jusqu’à leur maison, dans un magnifique compound, qu’on n’a pas pu vraiment apprécier à sa juste valeur ce soir-là car on est arrivé sous la pluie, encore un autre typhon !

C’était tellement gai de retrouver toute la famille, Adeline, Victor et Olivia, Nala et Olivier, dans leur maison.

On a passé une chouette soirée avec eux à échanger des nouvelles, découvrir leur vie aux Philippines et raconter nos aventures. On a mangé un délicieux repas philippin et on a encore passé quelques bons moments après avant d’aller dormir. On était bien fatigué et on s’est endormi profondément dans leur magnifique maison.

By me (only a few small additions to Isabelle’s story):

When he wakes up (in Tokyo, this morning), Jules doesn’t believe his eyes: he’s amazed by his present (iPad) from the tooth fairy. He’s so happy!

In Santa Elena, at Miguel and Adeline’s house, we receive a great welcome from the family. It’s great to feel “home” (in a house where people actually live). The dinner is excellent: beautiful buffet with super good local food (including great shrimps), super healthy.

The staff that Adeline and Miguel have at home is very nice. Both Adeline and Miguel introduce the 3 of them to us, with a lot of kindness and respect. They seem happy to work here.

Just to make sure everybody can follow our summaries of the next few days: Olivier is the brother of Marinette, Isabelle’s mother. He and his wife, Nala, have 3 children, the youngest one being Adeline (29). So Adeline is the cousin of Isabelle. She married a Filipino a few years ago and since then she lives in Philippines, in Manila. Adeline and Miguel have 2 kids: Victor, 3 and Olivia, 1. They live in Santa Elena, near Manila where Miguel owns a company. Olivier and Nala live with them 9 to 10 months per year (basically when the climate is too cold in Belgium). Clear?

Note: we get back the bag with all our diving gear, which Isabelle sent to Philippines from Jeddah in June. It’s an additional bag to carry with us but this diving equipment will be very useful during our one-month stay in the country.

 

 

Friday 10/11 – Santa Elena, near Manila (1)

Ludivine forgot to do her summary of the day, so you’ll have only mine today…

We start with a great breakfast with huge fruit salad and pancakes.

We do a tour of the “compound” where they live. It’s super quiet, green and secure. There is a nice swimming pool and a nice playground, less than 100m from their house. It’s a paradise for the kids.

We go to the swimming pool and then stay at the pool house to do some homeschooling. The weather is warm and humid. It reminds us of something…

We want to eat at the golf club but it’s full (there’s an event today). We go to an Italian restaurant in a mall (an open mall in fact). Nice spaghetti for the whole family. We buy 2 sim cards with internet access (8 GB) and take some cash.

We eat a good ice cream. Everybody is so friendly and smiling. The vendors at the ice cream shop do some show (tricks) with the ice cream scoops. They even ask me to go 15 m away from the shop and then throw one scoop at me; I miss the first try but manage to catch it at the second trial.

Adeline and Miguel show us the new plot of land they bought with Nala and Olivier. They are going to start the construction soon. The plot of land is big and just beside the golf court. I’m sure their house will look great (in one year and a half); they chose an architect who fully understands the requirements related to the local weather. On our way back, we stop at a fun farm for the kids, with plenty of activities (including a zip line) and animals (rabbits, horse, sheep…). Kids love it! They are probably going to come back here in a few days.

We come back home and chill a bit. I’m working a bit while the rest of the family goes to the swimming pool.

We eat around 6:30pm.
